      @@herc1120 You're most welcome, Chris. I believe V. vidua does this more than its close relatives--or at least the contrast is much greater. Some of males in video were so large I had to wait for either the head or the tip of the abdomen to come into clear view, although males rarely have the "anchor" or "propeller" on T-3 that most queens have.

      Thanks. I gave them crushed banana. Also, a paper towel can be dampened with sugar water or honey and water. I'm not sure wasps would take pollen to feed larvae but I've heard of people providing lunch meat or protein like that.

      @@bobjacobson858 okay. So is this a relocation? What is with the plexiglass? What food were they eating? And were they fighting over it? And does this mean insects are starved? And could someone grow a supernest if you feed a colony?

      @@valentinsantiago277 This nest was relocated into a critter keeper for observation. They were provided with banana. I doubt they were starved, they had an appetite because they recently hatched and workers were foraging to provide for them also. There is no such thing as a superset and each nest begins fresh each spring. I hope this answers most of your questions. I appreciate the interest!

      @@herc1120 Great. Thank you for the reply. I live in Florida and down here we can have multi year nests and the get to be huge. I mean like millions of workers with thousands of queens. They are very deadly and are removed immediately after being found. The bigger ones eventually never stop because the population creates so much heat that winter has no impact.

    • @bobjacobson858
      @bobjacobson858 День тому

      @@valentinsantiago277 Yes, such gigantic nests are made by Vespula squamosa, AKA the southern yellowjacket. This species is recognized by its having two longitudinal yellow stripes in the middle of the thorax, and queens that are orange-brown rather than strictly black and yellow. I collected such an overwintered nest just SW of Columbia, SC that nearly covered the floor of a shed and incorporated various objects within it, including an hand-held fire extinguisher. They have been found in GA, AL, and TX, and probably LA and MS, too, although I don't have data for the latter two states at my fingertips. I'm not aware of their being able to survive past a second year, so I would love to learn of any information otherwise. Florida, because of its warmer climate, reports the greatest number.

    Hate it when they get all in the insulation like that. Stinger Creations deals with that on trailers a lot it seems. Messy! Oh wow how’d you get popped with your suit on? My guess is you weren’t taped at the glove opening.

  • @danielhart7663
    @danielhart7663 17 днів тому

    I checked out one of these suits online they're about $550 they've got boots that are connected right to the suit the gloves are connected right to the suit it has mesh on the inside and the outside and the foam is 3/4 of an inch thick in between the mash. It has battery operated fans in the top of the helmet and on the chest. So you don't get overheated. It has a velcro strip that covers up the zipper. It seems like you're very well protected inside the suit. But those nests are so huge the numbers of hornets can be in the hundreds of thousands and the things are as big as your thumb.

    Wasps and Yellow Jackets can make their nests in some odd locations at times. Years ago, my FIL and BIL were building an addition onto their home. They had a patio door open a lot since it was warmer weather. A queen paper wasp wandered in, and instead of starting a nest in a corner of the ceiling, she went down to the middle of the floor and started setting up inside an electric cable package. They picked up the box and had a surprise when she flew out at them!

    • @bobjacobson858
      @bobjacobson858 21 день тому

      @@neutraltral8757 Sometimes the queen isn't a good "egg-layer" which limits the population growth. The colony could have been invaded by other queens with an ensuing fight killing off a substantial portion of the workers at an early stage. It may have also had a rather late start. The substrate may have been difficult to excavate, allowing the nest to expand. There are likely to be additional possibilities, or even a combination of them.
